I am overjoyed to be appointed the first writer in residence for Talliston House & Gardens in Essex.
25 years ago Talliston was an ordinary three-bedroomed, semi-detached, ex-council house in Essex. Its transformation into a magical labyrinth of times and places began with a room that inspired the owner to write.
It has been re-imagined as the 1929 New York office of writer and wealthy publisher, Jedediah Elston Trevillian.
Every single detail of the house (including smells) has been meticulously researched and put together by a team of local artisans and volunteers. Besides the office, my favourite rooms are the New Orleans kitchen and the Hall of Mirrors. I find the Haunted Bedroom powerful but disturbing. Tucked underneath a chair are the shoes of a little dead boy who lived there once.
I’m their first WiR which means I get to write at Jedediah’s desk – and that is very exciting. I won’t be sleeping in the Haunted Bedroom though – that’s for sure!
